As local Carnaval festivities crescendo over the next few days, the traditional parades held in Chapala and Ajijic will be major attractions for local revelers and throngs of spectators.
Chapala always kicks off its calendar of activities with the Entierro de Mal Humor, a mock funeral procession combined with a samba parade featuring a coffin that contains — symbolically — ho-hum vibes to be incinerated at the Cristianía Park fairgrounds. The rowdy cavalcade was happening on Thursday night, just as the Guadalajara Reporter was going to press.

The town’s daytime Mardi Gras parade is set for Sunday, February 15, at 10 a.m., when the main street fills with color and excitement for an hour or more. Joining in for the occasion will be this year’s Carnaval royalty, troupes of dancers in fancy costumes, live musical groups, scenic floats and assorted motor vehicles.
