Over the past ten years, the Ajijic Feria de la Capirotada has been an annual highlight of the pre-Easter season. It was created as a unique culinary fair to showcase the sumptuous Mexican version of bread pudding, a favorite dessert specialty prepared exclusively during Lent.
Feria founder Lee Hopper, the son of American parents who raised him in Ajijic, chose to end the popular event after completing its decade-long cycle.
Local government officials said “no way” and decided to pick up where Hopper left off. The Feria will be back in business this Saturday, March 21, at the Ajijic Malecón, starting at 2 p.m.
The fair encompasses capirotada tasting samples and carry-out sales for the public, and contests for local cooks. There will be competition in two categories: Traditional versions of the dish made with classical ingredients, and Innovative interpretations with out-of-the-box components.
