In what is turning out to be a banner green year for the Lake Chapala region, local reforestation projects have kicked into high gear throughout the summer months.

Built with the aim of turning lakeside into a hub for technology and film-making enterprises, the once-promising Chapala Media Park has become a dusty white elephant government-backed project marked by the towering pink monolith at its entrance gate.

Wixárika people dressed in traditional tribal garb left offerings at their ceremonial shrine on Lake Chapala’s Isla de los Alacranes during this week’s commemoration of International Day of Indigenous Peoples.

When Melody Peterson saw that dogs were spreading the trash left for garbage pick-up in her neighborhood in Ajijic, she came up with an ingenious solution – the basura (trash) board.
