Nationwide emergency evacuation drill set for Sept. 19, nation’s darkest day

The Jalisco State Government hopes nearly three million citizens in the state will take part in emergency evacuation drills on Wednesday, September 19, National Civil Protection Day.

Government offices nationwide at every level, as well as hospitals, schools and universities, are requested to carry out the drills, which could be employed following a fire or earthquake.  Private companies are also urged to participate.

The magnitude 8.0 earthquake – one of the worst in the nation’s history – that struck Mexico City early on 19 September, 1985 caused the deaths of at least 10,000 people and massive damage to the capital.

“Carrying out drills is the best form of preparing ourselves for such a phenomenon,” Trinidad Lopez Rivas, Guadalajara Civil Protection and Fire Department general director, said this week.
