Mexico hits back at Trump with humor, TV ad campaign

Up until now it’s been late-night TV hosts in the United States and cartoonists who have poked the most fun at Republican presidential frontrunner Donald Trump.

Now some Mexican comics are getting in on the act, producing an 80-minute play that pillories Trump, painting him as a greedy, ignorant and dangerous capitalist.

The play, “The Sons of Trump,” is produced by the Mascabrothers, a troupe well-known for its slapstick humor. It follows four slimy businessmen who are eventually rewarded with Trump wigs by the great man himself once they have made their pile.

After playing to critical success in Mexico City, the play’s producers hope to take it to the border and then to Los Angeles and Chicago, where it will no doubt be warmly received in the Latino community.

Meanwhile, academic and former foreign secretary Jorge Castañeda is promoting an advertising campaign in the United States with the theme “Proud to be a Mexican.”  One of the aims is to highlight Mexicans who are feted in the United States and considered success stories, including film director Alfonso Cuaron, businessman Caros Slim and soccer player Javier “Chicharito” Hernandez.
