Police seek tips on phone scams

Have you received a phone call from an alleged friend in distress who asks for money to get out of trouble with Mexican police or customs officials?

Do you know someone else who has been the target of this hoax?

Chapala public security director Adán Domínguez would like to hear from local residents who have either avoided or been hoodwinked by an English-speaking caller who has been using the extortion ploy for the last couple of months.

Several victims have registered complaints to the Ministerio Público (district attorney’s office). But so far, not a single case has been reported to the police department.

Information that might help authorities track down the sly crook may be reported in person at police headquarters, Calle Niños Heroes at Zaragoza, by phone to 765-4444, directly to Dominguez at cel.
