Sistine Chapel replica springs up in capital

A full-size replica of the Sistine Chapel, adorned with Michelangelo’s famous frescos, is under construction beside the Monument to the Revolution in Mexico  City.

The ambitious project, which is costing $US2.5 million to build, is expected to draw around 50 million visitors over the next three years as it makes the rounds of all 32 state capitals in Mexico.

The exhibit is being financed by cultural promoter Antonio Berumen, with support from the Mexico City government.

The metallic structure is 27 meters high and lined on the inside with a special surface onto which high-definition images of Michelangelo’s work will be projected.  It will take around 25 days to erect and 20 days to dismantle.

Entry will be free but donations for charity will be accepted.  The exhibit opens on June 6.
