Only 16 cases? Is Mexico being complacent about Covid-19?

As yet, Mexico sees no need to cancel international flights, restrict entry at its borders and ports, cancel sporting events, or advise its citizens not to travel abroad due to Covid-19, Hugo Lopez-Gatell, the deputy federal health minister, said Wednesday.

pg2With just 16 cases confirmed, Mexico is still in level one of the pandemic, compared to level three in some European countries, Lopez-Gatell said.

Unlike the U.S. State Department, Mexico has not issued a general advisory to its citizens to reconsider all travel abroad due to the coronavirus outbreak.  It has only singled out individual countries, including China and Italy, as high-risk destinations.

Health officials said Wednesday that all the confirmed cases in Mexico are “imported,” so far only affecting people who contracted the disease abroad.
