Sustainable aviation fuel seen as key to airlines’ net-zero carbon emission goal

Aeromexico has begun operating its first flights between the United States and Mexico using sustainable aviation fuel (SAF).

pg7bAccording to an Aeromexico press release, the flights took place on International Day of Climate Action (October 23), departing from San Francisco to Guadalajara and Mexico City in Boeing 737-800 aircraft with GE/Safran CFM56 engines.

The flights reduced 27 tons of CO2 emissions, equivalent to making more than 3,800 cars zero-emission for one day in Mexico City, Aeromexico said.  For these trips, almost 40,000 liters of sustainable fuel made from waste animal fats and vegetable oils, as well as Jet-A jet fuel, were purchased, the carrier noted.
