AMLO defends military’s growing role in public life

Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador marked the halfway point of his term of office with a major rally held in the Mexico City Zocalo December 1, primarily to celebrate his administration’s achievements over the past three years.

pg1bAs thousands of Morena party faithful were bussed into the capital’s main square from all around the country, some observers were reminded of past times when presidents from the authoritarian Partido Revolucionario Institutional (PRI) would hold similar public acts of self-vindication and aggrandizement.

Addressing one of the most topical issues of the moment, Lopez Obrador recognized and praised the role the military has played during his presidency, stressing that the increased presence of the armed forces on the streets of Mexico has had no negative consequences.

“We haven’t declared war on anyone,” the president said, alluding to the mounting criticism in the media that the nation is becoming “militarized.”
