Lawmakers seek stiffer animal cruelty penalties

Movimiento Ciudadano state legislator Fabiola Cuan has introduced an initiative to increase the sanctions for animal cruelty in Jalisco.

She wants to see the punishment for permanent injury to an animal caused by mistreatment increased from six months to one year in prison, to one year to three years.  She also wants the maximum sanction for deliberate death to an animal to go up from three to five years in prison. The proposed legislation comes after an outcry provoked by recent cases of animal abuse against dogs and horses in Tonala, plus a case of cat poisoning.
