Teachers get pay rise, although dissident union says hike is not enough

May 15, President Andrés Manuel López Obrador announced an 8.2-percent increase in the salaries of all teachers in Mexico, underscoring that from now on no teacher will earn less than 16,000 pesos a month.

pg3aThe wage hike, announced on Mexico’s Dia del Maestros (Teacher’s Day), will cost the federal government around 42 billion pesos, according to some estimates.

López Obrador said the current average wage of public school teachers is around 12,000 a month—4,000 pesos less than the average for all workers registered in the Mexican Institute of Social Security (IMSS).
