Mexico City Mayor Claudia Sheinbaum will resign her post on June 16 as she starts her quest to become the first female president of the nation.
Although previously stating that she wanted to continue in her role until the “official” campaigning period begins, that became awkward after her main rival for the National Regeneration Movement (Morena) nomination for the presidency, Foreign Minister Marcelo Ebrard, stepped down from his job last week.
Both Morena’s leadership and President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador had urged all potential candidates for the party’s nomination to give up their public roles, in order to maintain “a level playing field.”
Another presidential hopeful, Interior Minister Adán Augusto López Hernández, will leave his job on June 16, while Senator Ricardo Monreal has also thrown his hat into the ring for the Morena showdown.
