Morena propaganda is illegal, opposition parties maintain

Various civilian organizations last weekend carried out a nationwide effort to highlight the illegal electoral propaganda that is being put up by the ruling Movimiento Regeneración Nacional (Morena) Party  for their “pre-candidates” for the Mexican presidential election in 2024.

Six Morena hopefuls are currently touring the nation, holding public rallies and “campaign-style events,” while trying not to openly breach strict electoral regulations that mandate such activities cannot start until later in the year.

Opposition parties have lodged multiple complaints  with electoral authorities about the surfeit of illegal advertising for the Morena “pre-candidates” that have sprung up all over Mexico. Illegal, they argue, because they give the candidate who will eventually be selected by Morena unfair additional public exposure prior to the established calendar.  The propaganda has appeared mostly on billboards, buses and the walls of private lots and buildings.
