Morena Party besieged by infighting

The whiff of controversy surrounds the ruling Morena Party’s selection process (primary) for its presidential candidate.

pg2aMorena members last week voted for former Mexico City Mayor Claudia Sheinbaum to represent President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador’s party in next year’s election. She has pledged to continue the “4th Transformation,” the name AMLO has given to his vision for radical change to Mexico’s political, economic and social system that he compares to three previous historical transformations: independence from Spain in 1810, the liberal reforms of 1857-1861, and the Mexican Revolution of 1910-1917.

Following Morena’s primary process, which concluded on September 6, former Foreign Minister Marcelo Ebrard, Sheinbaum’s chief rival for the nomination, cited numerous irregularities in the polling method, including bias, manipulation of data, and urns that went missing during the vote count.
