Governor & president to deliver final ‘Gritos’

Jalisco Governor Enrique Alfaro will deliver his final “Grito”—the reenactment of  Miguel Hidalgo’s 1810 call for independence from Spanish rule—at 11 p.m. on Sunday, September 15 from the balcony of the Government Palace in downtown Guadalajara.

pg1bAlfaro urged his fellow Tapatíos to come out and enjoy a “spectacular” fiesta, set to kick off at 7 p.m., featuring  music by the popular group La Arrolladora Banda El Limón, multimedia projections and a fireworks display following the Grito ceremony.

The following day, Monday, September 16, is the actual Independence Day and a public holiday. The traditional parade will be held along Avenida Chapultepec, starting at 10 a.m.

In Mexico City’s Zócalo, President Andrés Manuel López Obrador will also deliver the Grito for his sixth and final time. More than 100,000 people typically fill the massive square for the September celebration, and presidents often use the occasion to showcase their intense patriotic spirit.
