Rights groups continue to voice concerns over ongoing targeting of transgender individuals in Mexico.
According to the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR), 36 transgender or gender-diverse people were killed in the first seven months of 2024, approaching last year’s total of 52 (Statista).
In June and July alone, at least eight murders were reported across Nuevo Leon, Tabasco, and Mexico City. In Jalisco, two transgender persons have been killed this year: one found in January showing signs of violence at the bottom of a ravine in Hacienda de Vidrio, Tala, and another killed on May 13 in Nueva España, Tlaquepaque.
Since 2020, investigators have opened case files for 11 transgender deaths in Jalisco, yet no prosecutions have occurred to date. The IACHR recently urged Mexican authorities to intensify efforts against bias-motivated violence, emphasizing the need for coordinated government action and impartial, diligent investigations meeting international standards.
