One year after its inauguration, the final section of the 1,540-kilometer Tren Maya tourist train opened on December 15, completing a mega-project that has sparked mixed reactions across Mexico.
President Claudia Sheinbaum cut the ribbon on the 287-kilometer stretch of track between Escárcega in Campeche and Chetumal in Quintana Roo, proudly stating that only a nation like Mexico could build such a railway in just four years.
Constructed and operated by the federal government, the 34-station line forms a loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, connecting five states and numerous archaeological and cultural sites — some of which are open to the public for the first time.
