On February 9, President Claudia Sheinbaum led the commemoration of the 112th anniversary of the Marcha de la Lealtad (March of Loyalty), a historic event that demonstrated the loyalty of the Mexican military to President Francisco I. Madero during the early stages of the Mexican Revolution.
On this day in 1913, as a military coup led by Victoriano Huerta unfolded, Madero’s safety was ensured by cadets from the Heroic Military College, who escorted him from Chapultepec Castle to the National Palace, marching along Paseo de la Reforma and through the main streets of Mexico City.
The march symbolizes the steadfast loyalty of the Mexican Armed Forces to the Constitution and the government, and it is celebrated annually with a reenactment followed by a ceremony. During this year’s ceremony, as well as emphasizing the armed forces’ loyalty to the president, Defense Minister Ricardo Trevilla Trejo declared that Mexico’s sovereignty is “not negotiable.”
