Mexico keeps egg prices low

As avian flu continues to spread and egg prices skyrocket in the United States, Mexico has managed to keep costs affordable.

Eggs in Mexico: about US$1.63 per dozen.

The average price of a dozen Grade A eggs in U.S. cities reached US$4.95 (101 pesos) this week. Meanwhile, in Guadalajara supermarkets, 18-count cartons of white eggs were selling for around 50 pesos (US$2.44)—equivalent to just US$1.63 per dozen. Prices are even lower for bulk purchases.

In some parts of the U.S., egg prices have reached astronomical levels. In California, for example, a dozen eggs now costs a staggering US$9.

Beyond high prices, eggs are also in short supply. Some stores have posted signs limiting customers to one carton per visit, while restaurants have begun adding an “egg surcharge” to menu items. The situation has become so extreme that thieves are now targeting egg shipments, turning them into a highly sought-after commodity.
