Flu season in full swing as cases surge

Jalisco is seeing a significant rise in doctor visits and hospitalizations due to flu-like symptoms, although the full extent of the current influenza surge is difficult to determine due to limited surveillance reporting data.

The number of confirmed positive flu tests in Jalisco rose from 182 to 242 during the week of February 10 to 17. Flu testing remains uncommon, so these numbers are no indication of the complete picture, but they do indicate a clear upward trend, suggesting a significant surge.

Concerns grew last week after reports revealed that nearly one-third of students at a Guadalajara primary school were being kept at home by their parents following a flu-like outbreak at the institution.  Local health authorities later played down the outbreak, noting that only 12 children were actually suffering from a respiratory condition, and none with serious symptoms.
