Finish of GDL-Vallarta short route not yet close

The 187-kilometer new Via Corta (short route) highway, touted as a 2½ hour trip to Puerto Vallarta from Guadalajara, still has a long way to go.

pg21aThe Mexican Secretariat of Infrastructure, Communications and Transport is estimating that the project will be finished in December 2024 at a cost of almost 18 billion pesos ($US893 million). Originally, the project, which began in 2011, was to be finished in 2014 at a cost of 13 billion pesos ($US645 million).

Recent reports from various Jalisco newspapers show that the first section—Jala to Compostela—in operation since February 2018, has been plagued by washouts. This four-lane section runs 64 kilometers, takes 45 minutes to complete and has a toll charge of 120 pesos. Then it is back onto Highway 200 and its multitude of curves.
