State government to fund TOEFL English exams

The Jalisco state government is to help people find better jobs by sponsoring English speakers to take the TOEFL ITP examination.

An agreement signed by the Labor Secretariat (STPS) and the Universidad de Guadalajara (UdG) this week will allow Jalisco residents to take the exam without cost.

The state government has allocated almost  three million pesos so that 5,200 job seekers can sit the TOEFL test.

“As a government we know that often when you don’t have a job, you don’t have the resources to go looking for one,” Jalisco Governor Aristoteles Sandoval said Thursday at the launch of a Guadalajara jobs fair. “It’s important that authorities serve as a link between those seeking work and those needing personnel.”

Mexican citizens who wish to take advantage of this offer should make an application at the Servicio Nacional del Empleo, located at Paseo Degollado 54 in downtown Guadalajara’s  Plaza Tapatia, or by calling (33) 3668-1684.

TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) was developed to measure the English language proficiency of non-native English language speakers wishing to enroll in U.S. universities. A person’s  TOEFL score has since become a standard measurement for government agencies, licensing bodies, businesses and other institutions, not only in the United States but also in Mexico and other nations.

The test involves listening, structure and written expression, reading comprehension and writing.
