How will schools cope when classes resume?

Although schools in Jalisco are due to open in six weeks, the full Covid-19 protocols that will need to be out in place are still far from clear.

pg6One of the major complications, according to state officials, is that 45 percent of classes at public schools have more than 30 students. Additionally, children are often crammed into small classrooms, with the average size being between 50 and 60 square meters.  This makes separating students by 1.5 meters an almost impossible task.

Federal education authorities have already created some guidelines for school reopening, which include screening students (temperature checks), application of hand sanitizer, etc., both when they enter the school premises, as well as their classrooms. Entrance times will be staggered, as will be recesses, face coverings will be mandatory, and there will be no congregating in common areas.  Schools will also be encouraged to make the maximum use of their open spaces and suspend all assemblies, ceremonies and meetings. If even one case of Covid-19 is detected, the school will be automatically closed.
