Stationary stores feel the pinch

Around 8,000 small stationary businesses out of a total 200,000 in Mexico have been forced to close during the coronavirus pandemic, according to the Confederation of National Chambers of Commerce, Services and Tourism (Concanaco).

The major reason for this, the organization said, has been the closure of schools.

Diego Céspedes, president of the National Association of Manufacturers of School and Office Supplies (Anfaeo), said 120,000 stationary stores in Mexico depend the sale of school supplies, as well as uniforms, backpacks and other academic materials, to keep themselves afloat.

Sales at stationary stores dropped by around 70 percent between March and July, Céspedes reported. The sector will continue to suffer, he said, as the 2020-2021 school year goes remote.
