One in five private schools is at risk of closing because of reduced enrollment caused by the Covid-19 pandemic, various sources say.
According to Gabriela de Guadalupe Morales Alvarez, president of the Federation of Private Schools of Western Mexico (Fepoc), re-enrollments have decreased an average of 25 percent in the 180 schools affiliated with her organization.
And in a survey carried out by the Institute of Statistical and Geographical Information of Jalisco (IIEG), 200 out of 250 schools questioned said they had seen a decrease in re-enrollments.
Meanwhile, the Alianza de Colegios Particulares (Alliance of Priavte Schools) claimed 15 percent of their 80 affiliates are in imminent danger of having to close.
Representatives of private schools have been among the most vociferous opponents of the federal government’s decision to start the 2020-21 academic year remotely. In-person education will only return once states show significantly reduced rates of Covid-19 transmission, authorities have determined.
