The government of Jalisco and the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) have signed an agreement to train up to 50 caregivers of institutionalized children.
This accord follows the controversy generated by a recent incident at the Casa Hogar 100 Corazones in Guadalajara, in which a caregiver was filmed punching and abusing a ten-year-old boy.
The training program will allow caregivers to develop skills required “to deal with stress and generate models of non-violent discipline,” said José Miguel Santos, Jalisco’s secretary of Social Assistance.
The first stage of the agreement will see specialized training given to caregivers at children’s homes operated by the Jalisco Family Development Agency (DIF). Personnel from private shelters will be included in the second phase of the program.
