Canadians target of toll road carjacking

A Canadian couple on their way back home after wintering at lakeside has reported a harrowing tale of being held up by bandits on the Guadalajara-Lagos de Moreno toll road (80D).

for 2On the morning of Monday, May 1, Todd Landry, his wife Karen and their two small dogs left their house in Cielo Vista, San Antonio Tlayacapan in their Ford Ranger truck, towing a small eight-foot trailer.

After about three hours on the road and having passed two toll booths, Landry drove past a line of traffic cones that suggested some kind of road works was going on.

“I looked in the mirror saw a couple of cars pull out behind me from where the cones were and accelerate toward me,” he said. “They came up close and tried to box me in, yelling and waving guns, telling me to pull over.”

Landry said he attempted to back up but in the process damaged both the truck and the trailer.  “I then saw an opportunity to escape between the two cars, but the wheel of the trailer fell off.”

With the two vehicles still in pursuit, Landry could only continue for half a kilometer without the trailer wheel before he was obliged to pull over.

He said at least six armed assailants, all wearing either clown or Halloween masks, then piled out of the cars.
