January-June tourism booms

Despite a strong peso reducing the purchasing power of visitors’ dollars and euros, Mexico is still one of the world’s most popular destinations—and Jalisco is leading the way!

Jalisco placed third in the state rankings for the number of foreign tourists who visited Mexico in the first half of 2023, according to National Institute of Statistics and Geography (Inegi) data.

With 1.7 million international visitors, Jalisco accounted for 16 percent of all foreigners arriving in Mexico between January and June, surpassed only by Quintana Roo and Mexico City.

Puerto Vallarta was the fourth most visited destination, after Cancun, Mexico City and San José del Cabo. Just over one million foreign tourists touched down at the Puerto Vallarta Airport in the first semester of 2023, 14 percent more than in 2019 and 15 percent more than last year. (The numbers dropped considerably in 2020 and 2021 due to the Covid pandemic.)

Despite significantly lower numbers than Vallarta, Guadalajara was the fifth most visited destination in Mexico, with 656,00 foreign citizens arriving at its international airport during this period.
