Covid spikes in Jalisco, but no need for alarm, expert says

Health expert calls for a Covid vaccination program in Mexico prior to the advent of winter; new vaccines coming in the United States.

pg2A leading investigator at the University of Guadalajara (UdeG) says while Covid-19 cases in Jalisco are rising, the number are not alarming.

Héctor Raúl Pérez Gómez, head of the university’s Institute of Infectious and Experimental Pathology, noted that the vast majority of the cases are mild and the new variants that have emerged should be considered “of interest, but not of concern.”

Jalisco closed the last week of August with the highest number of Covid-19 infections reported since the health emergency was lifted on May 5 of this year.

According to data from the Jalisco Health Secretariat (SSJ), between August 27 and September 2, 456 cases of coronavirus were confirmed in the state, 46.1 percent more than the 312 a week earlier.

Deaths and hospitalizations due to the virus remain low, however. Four deaths where Covid-19 was mentioned on the death certificate were confirmed in the past week, the SSJ said.
