Campaigns for next state governor kick off

The official period during which local political parties will select their candidates to run for the Jalisco governorship next year begins on Sunday, November 5.

The Citizen’s Movement (MC), the party of current Governor Enrique Alfaro, will register aspirants on Monday, October 30, with Guadalajara Mayor Pablo Lemus heading the list as the clear favorite (Lemus is expected to ask to take a leave of absence from his post in the next few days.)

Lemus might even run unopposed. MC National Coordinator Manuel Romo Parra said this week that he hoped the Jalisco party would agree to a single “unity” candidate prior to the registration cutoff date, in order to avoid a bruising campaign between rival MC factions.

Meanwhile, the alliance of the National Regeneration Movement (Morena), Green Party and Partido del Trabajo has announced that it will select its candidate after October 30.  Six hopefuls are currently battling it out in a primary process that will end with a vote by party members.
