Firefighters evacuated several hundred residents from their homes after a “mega leak” occurred in a Pemex fuel pipeline running adjacent to a pueblo near the Jalisco town of Zapotlanejo.
According to reports, around 650,000 liters of fuel leaked from the line after it was targeted by criminals intent on siphoning off the valuable commodity.
Images and videos shared on social media showed a jet of fuel, visible from several kilometers away, rising more than 20 meters into the air. A statement from Pemex said that the leak came from one of four taps made by the criminals.
More than 170 officials from 19 municipal, state and federal government departments participated in the effort to control the fuel leak. It was contained after about nine hours, when residents of the small pueblo of La Mezquitera were allowed to return to their homes.
