The suburban metro-area town of Tesistan hosts the 2024 Feria de Elote (Corn Fair) from August 14 to 18.
Corn in all its many forms will be showcased during this popular annual event in the municipality of Zapopan, free to the public.
Among Mexico’s most popular corn dishes are esquites, a street food consisting of corn kernels that are boiled and then sautéed with butter, onions and, sometimes, epazote. The corn is then mixed with ingredients such as mayonnaise, lime juice, cotija cheese, and chili powder. Another hugely popular dish is the Mexican version of corn on the cob (elotes asados), in which the cobs are grilled then smothered in cream and sprinkled with dry cotija cheese, chili powder and cilantro. Other foods visitors will find for sale include corn-flour breads, ice cream, gelatins and puddings.
As well as the many booths and fiesta ambiance, there will be plenty of live entertainment for attendees.
Easily reached, Tesistan is 12 kilometers from the Belenes intersection of the Guadalajara periferico (ring road). On the way, you will pass through many of Zapopan’s newest subdivisons, and alongside the city’s Base Aérea Militar (Air Base), and Escuela Militar de Aviación (Military Flying School).
Closer to Chapala, another Feria de Elote is held each September in the pueblo of Atequiza, in the municipality of Ixtlahuacan de los Membrillos. Look out for further information in upcoming editions of this newspaper
