Jalisco election was clean, court rules

The losing candidate in Jalisco’s June 2 gubernatorial race seems determined to challenge the result, even as electoral authorities maintain that the process was clean and fair.

pg7aIn early August, the Jalisco Electoral Tribunal (TEEJ) upheld the victory of Pablo Lemus from the Citizens’ Movement (MC), dismissing the Morena Party’s claims of multiple irregularities.

The final count showed Lemus receiving 1,626,789 votes (44.25 percent), while second-place candidate Claudia Delgadillo of Morena garnered 1,440,024 votes (39.17 percent). According to Article 41 of the Mexican Constitution, if the margin between the first- and second-place candidates is greater than five percent, the winner is automatically declared. However, if the margin is five percent or less, the Federal Electoral Tribunal (TEPJF) must conduct a special review to ensure the integrity of the election, considering any challenges or irregularities.

With a margin of 5.08 percent, the state tribunal was not required to request federal court intervention.
