Tlaquepaque dining complex remains closed

The large Parian Restaurant in Tlaquepaque has remained closed ever since part of its exterior roofing collapsed on September 3.

Engineers brought in to assess the damaged structure reported that extensive renovations are needed to ensure the safety of the 139-year-old building, one of the most iconic in the heart of Tlaquepaque.

A major issue is determining who will cover the cost of the repairs. Although the building is privately owned by a consortium of the 18 small restaurant chains operating within the complex, some city councilors believe the municipal authorities should contribute additional funding, given El Parian’s significance to tourism and the local economy. The complex regularly hosts folkloric ballet and mariachi performances in its central plaza, which features a charming bandstand.
