The Jalisco Electoral Institute (IEPC) has deregistered two political parties, Hagamos and Futuro, for failing to meet the required electoral support thresholds in the state elections held this June.
Both parties failed to secure at least three percent of the vote in elections for governor, state legislators, and municipal mayors, the minimum needed to maintain their legal status.
The six other parties that contested the Jalisco elections are registered at the national level and met the thresholds set by the National Electoral Institute (INE).
Deregistered parties loose access to public financing and broadcast time on radio and television. They are also required to liquidate their assets.
It is unclear whether members of Futuro and Hagamos will seek to form new political parties under different names. According to IEPC President Paula Ramírez, the institute will open a window for the registration of new political parties in 2025. This opportunity arises only in the year following a gubernatorial election.
