January 12, a 6.1 magnitude earthquake with its epicenter in Coalcomán, Michoacán was felt across several western Mexican states, including Jalisco and Colima.
This was the strongest quake in Mexico this year and one of the most significant in the past 12 months. No damages were reported in Jalisco, state Civil Protection said. The National Seismological Service (SMN) reported that the quake had a depth of 30 kilometers, and more than 415 aftershocks of varying intensities were recorded. According to the SMN, 33,483 earthquakes were documented in Mexico in 2024, but only one had a magnitude greater than six.
