Jalisco tomato producers are reeling from the announcement that the United States is imposing a 17-percent tariff on most tomatoes imported from Mexico, effective immediately.
As Mexico’s second-largest tomato-producing state after Sinaloa, Jalisco exports 90 percent of its tomato crop to the United States. The key tomato-producing municipalities in Jalisco include Ciudad Guzmán, San Gabriel, Tomatlán, Poncitlán and Sayula.
Roberto Miramontes Mariscal, general director of the Agrifood Alliance, stated that producers cannot absorb the tariff, as their profit margins are too low to cover any additional costs.
