1968 student massacre remembered

In what seems to have become an annual tradition in Guadalajara, protestors marked the anniversary of the October 2, 1968 student massacre in Mexico City by placing a “murderer” sign on the  statue of former Jalisco Governor Marcelino Garcia Barragan  that graces the city’s Rotunda of Illustrious Citizens.  Garcia was Mexico’s Defense Secretary at the time of the massacre, in which soldiers opened fire on protesting students, killing an unspecified number, believed to be in excess of 300.

Work suspended on outer city ring road

Is there a jinx on major public works projects in Jalisco? After legal issues recently halted work on the Zapotillo curtain dam in the north-eastern region of the state, now the city’s Macro Libramiento (outer city ring road) finds itself mired in complications, after environmental authorities cast doubts on the sustainability of the project.

Mexico celebrates Independence Sept. 15, 16

There is no exact record of Miguel Hidalgo’s rousing speech that set off a nationwide revolt against Mexico’s Spanish rulers in 1810, but the spirit is captured in modern day orations that will climax with a litany glorifying national heroes and howling cheers of “Viva Mexico!” on Monday, September 15.
