Legendary Ajijic musician to be honored at Degollado Theater

The Jalisco Culture Secretariat will pay tribute to a late Lakeside musical giant in a unique concert at the Teatro Degollado on October 7.

Born in Ajijic in 1943, Victor Manuel Medeles Romero was one of Jalisco’s most prominent contemporary musicians.

An accomplished modern composer, as well as a beloved teacher and promoter of musical education, Medeles died in September 2009 after a long battle with stomach cancer.

Shortly before his death Medeles was commissioned to compose a new symphony to be performed during the 2010 bicentennial commemoration of Mexico’s Independence.

That piece, entitled “Mexican Suite for Orchestra,” will now  finally receive its world premiere, performed by the Jalisco Philharmonic Orchestra led by guest conductor Hector Quintanar.

Throughout his career Medeles gained international recognition for his work as a composer, producing several complete symphonies along with shorter pieces for performance by instrumental and vocal soloists, trios, quartets, quintets, chamber orchestras, choral groups and electronic devices.

The Jalisco State Choir will join the JPO for the performance.

Another famous musician, Michoacan’s Domingo Lobato, will also be recognized on the night.

The performance takes place Friday October 7, 8.30 p.m. in the Teatro Degollado. The Culture Secretariat has announced that tickets will be free  but no details of how they can obtained was available at press time. Call the Degollado box office at (33) 3614-4773 or the Culture Secretariat at (33) 3942-1200 for further information. It could be that patrons can just turn up, since the performance  may not be full.
