Chiapas handiwork assured as special draw at Feria de Maestros

As final planning details for the 13th annual Feria Maestros del Arte start to gel, event founder Marianne Carlson is pleased to report exciting news that the Chiapas Council of Culture and Arts is coming through with bus transport to bring 20 craftsmen from isolated rural villages to show their unique wares at the three-day fair.

The Feria, now celebrated as a prime showcase for quality Mexican crafts and folk art, will be held November 14-16 on the sprawling grounds of Chapala’s Club de Yates. Gates will be open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Friday and Saturday, and from 10-4 on Sunday.

The fine goods coming in from Chiapas will include a big assortment of handsome textiles and traditional clothing apparel following designs and techniques that go back to ancient times. Other products originating from the region will range from pottery, lacquer ware and wooden masks to iron work and jewelry fashioned in silver and amber.

Mass transportation has also been arranged for artesanos from faraway places in Oaxaca, Michoacán and Chihuahua who are already packing up top notch goods to entice lakeside shoppers.  Jalisco, Guanajuato, Estado de México, Puebla, Guerrero and Yucatán will also be represented.
