Gallery closes

Local artist Luisa Julian has closed her Galeria Las Flores art gallery located on Morelos in the heart of Ajijic.

Julian, who owned one of the first galleries in Ajijic (more than 30 years ago) is well known for her large and realistic paintings of flowers. She has also been an instructor of painting for many in the Lakeside community.

Don’t worry, Julian isn’t going anywhere. She’ll paint at home and sell her work through another gallery. We’ll let you know where.

Pesos raised

Generous Lakeside residents have donated 101,400 pesos toward the completion of a statue donated to the Ajijic Cultural Center by master sculptor Miguel Miramontes.

Artist Efren Gonzalez, the center’s administrator, says he’s thrilled that he has only 58,600 pesos to go.

The bronze was poured into the lost wax on May 15. Gonzalez says he will continue with his fund-raising efforts in the weeks ahead. Anyone who wishes to contribute to this project can reach him at 766-5381.

Next upon the fund-raising agenda is a “Spectacular Fiesta Mexicana” set for Saturday, June 15 on the Ajijic plaza. The gala event will feature dance troupes Son de Mexico and the new Sones de Ajijic making its debut. Both troupes are directed by Luis Guzman.

There will be a Mexican buffet of pozole, tamales and tostadas and raffles held with the event tickets. The tickets for 300 pesos are available at the Efren Gonzalez Gallery at Marcos Castellanos 7 in Ajijic, La Nueva Posada, Actinver Ajijic and the Ajijic Cultural Center. The ticket entitles the holder to a free margarita.

Art store

The official opening of the art store in the Ajijic Cultural Center and the unveiling of the mural by Juan Navarro will be held on Friday, May 31, 6 p.m. The office has been moved to a spot next to the store to make purchasing easier. The store will feature works in several media by local artists.

If you can’t make it to the opening, regular business hours will be 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday through Saturday.
