24-hour motorbike ride traverses 1,000 miles

Approximately 70 hardcore Mexican and U.S. motorcyclists took on the 1,000-miles-in-24-hours challenge issued by the combined Asphalt Rats Endurance Motorcycling/Iron Butt Association (AREM/IBA) groups.

The rally began last Saturday in Mazatlan, Sinaloa at 4 a.m., hit Guadalajara at  about 8 a.m. for a pit stop (photo below) and continued on to San Luis Potosi before crossing the state line into Zacatecas and making a pit stop in the city of Durango. The  bikers then motored down the curvey winding Devil’s Backbone highway in the middle of the night before returning to Mazatlan.

Mazatlan club Pata Salada sponsored the party with some 800 bikers enjoying multiple bands and a big fiesta during the 2-day event. These long-distance rides are fairly new to Mexico, explained Marco Almaraz, AREM/IBA Mexico’s founder/president.  “Just as in the U.S. and Canada back in the 80’s, long-distance motorcycling adventure in Mexico is growing and gaining popularity.”
