University reaches out to crime victims

A victim support program has been launched at the University of Guadalajara to help protect students from violent crime.

The program will provide advice and support to the student population, and was created in coordination with the Federation of University Student (FEU) and the poet Javier Sicilia, who started a victims’ movement after his son was killed in 2011.

Students in need can contact the support network and receive free legal advice and psychological support.

Sicilia said the support program fulfills the university’s social vocation but is a task that is really the responsibility of the state.

“The universities have the highest index of credibility,” Sicilia said, in reference to the numerous surveys showing that universities are more trusted than politicians, police or the armed forces.
