There was no drama, as with the transition from the penultimate director of the Jalisco Philharmonic (OFJ), Canadian Marco Parisotto, to the most recent one, Jesus Medina, who began at his post in 2018 at the time Parisotto left.
But the new year has quietly ushered in new musical leadership at the 107-year-old OFJ headquartered at Guadalajara’s Teatro Degollado: Spanish-born composer and Director Jose Luis Castillo, who trained in Salzburg, Luxembourg and Paris, and moved to Mexico at the age of 30 to take up academic and directorial positions. The 55-year-old Castillo is known for an innovative and contemporary bent in his work in Mexico and around the world.
He is backed up by new Artistic Manager Horacio Cicero, who has been working at the OFJ since October, after rumblings of financial and labor problems had surfaced under previous management.
