Dear Sir,
Last week, when my husband and I went to Guadalajara for a doctor’s appointment, we found we had a few hours to spare and visited a mall.
As we were driving out of the mall parking lot, I unfortunately snagged a tire valve on a pipe sticking out from the curb. It broke off and we had a flat tire!
After I parked, one of two ladies in the car behind me leaned out the window asking if we knew how to fix a flat.
“Not really,” I replied, with my husband adding that he felt too weak.
“We’ll be back,” they told us.
After a short wait, the two ladies returned through the mall parking lot and pulled up beside us. They jumped out, one grabbing the tire iron and the other the jack, and away they went to change the tire.
When they finished we wanted to pay them but they wouldn’t hear of it. There were hugs and kisses all around. We got to the hospital in plenty of time.
It’s good to know that it’s not all thieves and drug dealers here – there are plenty of good people too.

Editor’s note: That’s a heart-warming story and representative of the kind nature of the vast majority of Mexican citizens. We should warn, however, that many cases have been reported to this newspaper of persons with less honorable intentions who hang around parking lots of malls and supermarkets pretending to offer help to motorists who return to their cars to find they have a puncture. In reality, they are the ones who ruptured the tire and instead of helping are only looking to see what they can steal from the vehicle.
