Boxer Misael Rodríguez, 22, won Thursday what could turn out to be Mexico’s only medal at the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympics.
He picked up a bronze medal in the Men’s Middleweight (75kg) category, after losing his semi final against Bektemkir Melikuziev of Kazakhstan.
Mexico’s disappointing games continued during the second week of competition, with even the nation’s highly-rated divers failing to place near the top three spots in their competitions.
The Mexican media has been particularly harsh, less on the athletes but rather on Olympic Committee officials, who have been slammed for their pitiful efforts to obtain funding for the Mexican team.
Many Mexicans were shocked to learn that prior to the Olympics, bronze medallist Rodríguez and other top boxers had been forced onto the streets of Mexico City with donations boxes to ask the public for money so they could travel to the World Championships in Qatar. This is quite the opposite to the massive funding and support given to Olympic hopefuls from the United States, Great Britain and China – not surprisingly the top three nations in the medals table.
In other Olympics news, Yvonne Treviño Hayek became Mexico’s first women’s long jump competitor. What’s so special about that? She is a cousin of famed Mexican actress Salma Hayek. “I’m very proud,” the actress tweeted.
