A young Austrian cyclist is in a coma after crashing while competing in a mountain bike downhill race in Puerto Vallarta on April 30.
Franz Grossmann is in a local hospital and has been joined by family members who have flown in from Austria.
The Down Puerto Vallarta 2017 race was sponsored by the Puerto Vallarta Tourism Trust and Altius Events. Around 40 professional and amateur cyclists competed on a 900-meter-long track comprised of steep descents, stairs, narrow alleys, ramps and jumps that finished on the Malecon. This relatively new but demanding extreme sport is becoming popular in Mexico, with events already held in several cities, including Taxco, Guerrero.
To support Grossmann and his family during his recovery, a GoFundMe page has been set up at GoFundMe/Franz-Grossmann-Recovery. The donation page was created by Fabio Schäfer of Gravity Mountainbike Magazine in Germany.
