The Guadalajara Chivas soccer team starts the new season (Clausura 2018) on Saturday, January 13 in a newly named stadium – the Estadio Akron.
Chivas executives recently signed a ten-year naming rights deal with the Mexican lubricants company that will see the Omnilife name disappear for at least a decade.
Omnilife is the name of the multi-level nutrition supplements company of Chivas owner Jorge Vergara.
The Akron logo will also appear on the reverse side of the Chivas players’ jerseys.
Chivas CEO José Luis Higuera said money from the naming rights deal will be used to strengthen the club’s roster and infrastructure.
Chivas fans are hoping for an improvement after a disappointing Apertura 2017 season, when the team finished in 17th place in the 18-team league. The team tied their first game 1-1 on the road to Toluca last weekend and play their home opener against the capital’s Cruz Azul Saturday, January 13, 9 p.m. at the Estadio Akron. In an added bonus for fans, the game will be a double-header, with ticket prices including the Chivas female team – last season’s champions – kicking off at 4:30 p.m. against Monterrey.

Atlas, Guadalajara’s other team in the Liga Mx, play in the older Estadio Jalisco on Friday evenings (except for one game on Tuesday, February 13). Games are scheduled January 19; February 2, 13 and 23; March 9 & 30; April 13 & 20.
