Russia’s invasion of Ukraine has put in doubt the next big fight for Guadalajara boxing superstar and quadruple world champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez.
Two weeks prior to the invasion, Alvarez’s camp announced that he will move up to the 175-pound light-heavyweight division for a WBA world title fight against Dmitry Bivol of Russia May 7 in Las Vegas.
High-profile figures in the boxing world are demanding that U.S. authorities ban Bivol from fighting.
The plea came from former world heavyweight champions Vitaly Klitschko, now the mayor of Kyiv, and his brother Wladimir, who are now fighting on the front line against Russian forces.
“This is not against the individual sportsman, but Ukraine needs the world to apply every pressure on Russia,” Klitschko said,
